Braves Swap Pena For Cordier

After deciding that shortstop Tony Pena Jr. wouldn't make the Atlanta Braves' Opening Day roster on Friday, the club traded him away to the Kansas City Royals for minor league hurler Erik Cordier.

The right-handed son of New York Yankees first base coach Tony Pena has been given the chance to become an everyday starter with the Royals. The 26-year-old split last year between AAA Richmond, where he batted .282 in 81 games, and Atlanta, where he hit .227 in 40 games. Pena is .342 with a homer and six RBIs this spring.

Cordier, just a young pup at 21, went a combined 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA for Class-A Idaho Falls and Burlington last year. As the Royals’ second-round pick in the 2004 amateur draft, the righty missed the entire 2005 season rehabbing from knee surgery and is now recovering from elbow ligament-replacement.
