St. Louis Cardinals Stick with Rafael Furcal and Skip Schumacker, Ditch Ryan Theriot

The St. Louis Cardinals worked on some odds and ends early this week, choosing to sign Rafael Furcal and Skip Schumaker to two-year deals and letting go of the sucky Ryan Theriot.

Schumaker signed on for two years, $3 million after batting .283 in 117 games for the reigning World Series champs last season. He went on to hit .381 in the postseason with the lone RBI in a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 5 of the National League division series... yes, that would be the game in which Nick Punto ripped off Chris Carpenter's jersey. While Schumaker roamed the outfield on five separate occasions in 2011, the 31-year-old is most comfortable at second base, where he made 89 starts last year.

Braves Drop into Tie with Cardinals for NL Wild Card

“It's like living out a bad dream... You never expect this to happen to you."
-- Chipper Jones

The Atlanta Braves are in the middle of an absolute free fall. In fact, they're all but giving the National League Wild Card to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Derek Lowe struggled once again, surrendering five runs on five hits and exiting in the fifth inning to a chorus of boos from the home crowd at Turner Field during his team's 7-1 loss to the NL East-champion Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta has now lost four straight and eight of 11, squandering the 8 1/2-game lead they enjoyed just three weeks ago.

Chase Utley, Hunter Pence, and Jimmy Rollins each went yard as the Phillies totally screwed up the Braves plans. They never even had a shot against Roy Oswalt, who gave up only three hits over six solid innings. Atlanta will send Tim Hudson to the mound Wednesday against Joe Blanton in an attempt to wrap up the Wild Card if they emerge victorious and the Cardinals manage to drop their final game of the season.

After rallying from a 5-0 deficit to crush the last-place Houston Astros 13-6, the Cardinals pulled even with the Braves, who had sole possession of the Wild Card lead since June 20. All good things must come to an end I suppose.

Cubs: The Riot Last Loser in Arbitration

The eighth and final player entered arbitration Friday and the panel of arbitrators wasted no time declaring their decision right away on Saturday.

With the Chicago Cubs beating Ryan Theriot, he’ll earn $2.6 million this season rather than the $3.4 million he requested. The shortstop, who made just $500,000 last season, batted .284 with seven home runs, 54 RBIs and 21 steals in 30 tries.

I like the way Theriot handled this. It reminds me of that old trick from high school: You need $10 for gas (okay, gas was a lot cheaper when I was in high school) so you ask Dad for $20. Instead of parting with a twenty, he tells you to get a god damn job and hands you a $10 bill instead. Dad thinks he’s taught you a lesson, and you have the $10 you needed.

At least, I think that’s what Theriot was trying to...

10,000 Wins. That's a Lot.

Blown leads, death-defying catches, big bats. That's just how the Chicago Cubs roll.

The Baby Bears beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6 Wednesday night on Ryan Theriot’s RBI single off Kip Wells with two outs in the 10th, for not only their sixth straight win but the club's 10,000th.
"It was a tough first 10,000 wins," The Riot laughed. "I hope the next 10,000 are easier."
Chicago improved to 15-6 for just the fourth time in the last 100 years, bringing their all-time record to 10,000-9,465. That's a lot of ball games.
