Scary Fernando Rodney Bullies Tampa Bay Rays into Giving Him a One-Year Deal

It's no secret that Fernando Rodney scares the crap out of us. In fact, we're pretty sure that he frightened the Tampa Bay Rays into giving him a one-year contract worth $2 million on Wednesday. The deal even has a club option for 2013. Hot Stove in Tampa Bay!

Let's be serious here for a minute. The right-hander's 4.50 ERA with the Los Angeles Angels last season doesn't exactly scream, "show me the money."

Rodney, who turns 35 in March, has seen his value sink drastically over the past two seasons. After signing a two-year, $11 million deal with the Halos back in 2009 as a free agent, he went on to provide the team with just 17 saves in 28 chances and compile a 7-8 record. He is a career 22-38 with a nice bloated 4.29 ERA over parts of nine seasons with the Angels and Detroit Tigers and has notched 87 saves in the past decade. What an athlete.

At least he can look forward to competing with Kyle Farnsworth in Tampa for the closer's job, which should be no competition at all. Because if Farny gets a job before you do, you have absolutely no business in the big leagues, pal.

Smokin' Hot Stove: Coast to Coast

The hot stove has been heating up for the past few days, and we've seen lots of random signings throughout the league. Let's recap!

Fernando Rodney, one of the scariest men in all of baseball, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels to the tune of $11 million. The 32-year-old right-hander enjoyed his first seven big league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, including the last two years as their closer. He converted 37 of 38 save opportunities last season, tossing a career-best 75.2 innings.

Miller Strains Hammy, Rodney Returns

The Detroit Tigers placed lefty Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list this weekend with a strained left hamstring.

Miller's injury occurred in the fourth inning of Friday's start against the Chicago White Sox, apparently on the last pitch to Paul Konerko.

The promising youngster is 5-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 11 starts this season and plans to return as soon as medically possible. The timely return of scary reliever Fernando Rodney may help the Tigers stop losing so many games in a row.

Rodney (1-5, 5.40 ERA) has been battling right shoulder tendinitis since mid-June. The righty tossed three scoreless innings over four games during a rehab assignment with the AAA Toledo Mud Hens earlier this week, so he should be ready to roll.

Rodney Lands On DL Again

The Detroit Tigers placed reliever Fernando Rodney on the 15-day disabled list Friday, with tendinitis in his right shoulder, retroactive to Sunday.

Manager Jim Leyland hopes to have him back after the All-Star Break.

With a short stint on the DL in late May, the right-hander is 1-5 with one save and a 5.40 ERA in 27 games this season.
