Torre Takes the Blame Once Again

TorreJoe Torre (six trips to the World Series and four rings or no) has always been the goat when his New York Yankees are in trouble.

He looked like a genius after they scratched and clawed their way back from 8 games under .500 in late May to win 2/3 of their remaining contests and become the AL wild card winners, but he's back to looking incompetent... in The Boss' eyes.

Yankees owner and filthy rich bastard, George Steinbrenner, has -- not for the first time -- given a near-impossible ultimatum: the club must overcome their deficit against the Cleveland Indians and reach the ALCS, or Torre won't be returning in 2008.

GeorgeGeorge isn't too thrilled with Alex Rodriguez's postseason play, either. But what else is new.

Those weren't the only thorns in Steinbrenner's side this weekend, however. He was also irritated with crew chief Bruce Froemming's decision to continue play when crazy insects invaded the field during Game 2 at The Jake on Friday.

"He won't umpire our games anymore," he said. "I have full control."
Rookie reliever Joba Chamberlain threw two wild pitches from the swarm that made it easy for the Tribe to tie the game in the eighth and go on to win 2-1 in extras.

So far, it's been a broomtastical weekend. The Bombers will look to avoid the sweep with veteran Roger Clemens on the bump for Sunday's Game 3 at home against Jake Westbrook and a hungry Indians offense.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that Froemming is retiring after this postseason, and everything to do with George Steinbrenner being a badass maverick who bows to the will of no man. If he says that Bruce Froemming won't umpire any more Yankee games (after this series), then by God, he won't umpire any more Yankee games (after this series).

Might be time to relinquish a little control, George.
