A Sad Day in Twins Territory

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan is stepping down this afternoon.

The club, who is out of the playoff race after winning the Central Division title four out of the last six seasons, has called a news conference to announce a "major reorganization of their baseball operations," in which the news about Ryan will officially be reported.

Ryan has taken some crap for signing a bunch of worthless nobodies this season and burning up some payroll, but for the majority of his tenure, he's had a hand in making a contender out of a club with just under a $71.5 million payroll.

Thirteen-year vice president and assistant GM Bill Smith will succeed Ryan, who will be his senior adviser.
