Baltimore Orioles lefty Erik Bedard, the big league strikeout leader for the second straight week, fanned 15 more last night to bring his season total to 149 as the O's managed a 3-0 rout of the Texas Rangers.
Tying a franchise record for K's, Bedard (7-4, 3.40 ERA) allowed only two hits in his first career complete game. He faced the minimum 27 batters, surrendering a single to Desi Relaford with one out in the first and another to Sammy Sosa leading off the eighth, inducing double-play grounders to delete each runner.
Jerry Hairston was the only Rangers batter to avoid striking out.
Jay Gibbons hit a solo shot in the second and Brandon Fahey had an RBI single in the ninth inning for Baltimore. Aubrey Huff scored on Rangers backstop Gerald Laird's throwing error in the fourth.
Making his second start since returning from the DL with a blister on his right middle finger, Rangers righty Brandon McCarthy (4-6, 5.70 ERA) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out three and walking two.
