Jim Edmonds, Juan Encarnacion Sit for Opener
Center fielder Jim Edmonds and right fielder Juan Encarnacion may not be there to defend the St. Louis Cardinals' World Series title to start the 2007 season.
Both players are likely to start out on the DL, as Edmonds is coming off foot and shoulder surgery and Encarnacion is recovering from an operation on his left wrist.
Edmonds was limited to 110 games last year due to injuries, including the dangerous post-concussion syndrome. He led the Cards with 10 runs driven in during the postseason after batting .257 with 19 homers and 70 RBI, his lowest totals since 1999. He began hitting only this week.
Encarnacion hit .278 with 19 homers and 79 RBI last year, batting .225 in the final month of the season and a shoddy .186 in the playoffs.
As temporary replacements, Chris Duncan could start in left field with Scott Spiezio in right. Preston Wilson or So Taguchi could fill in at center, even though Rick Ankiel started there against the Nationals on Wednesday. He is likely to begin this year in the minors as a corner outfielder for AAA-Memphis.
